To Old souls

I am easily ashamed
but most children capable of empathy are.

Our spirits have been around long enough
to see enough war
and abuse
that it doesn't take much to toy with our emotions
and tear out our hearts.

But with all that sorrow
comes wisdom
and hope
for the future.
